Lead Exposure Linked to Heart Disease Mortality, IQ Loss

Lead exposure is a global problem that may have a much bigger health impact than previously thought, some new research has discovered. It is specifically connected to adult deaths from cardiovascular disease and IQ loss in children under age 5.

To determine the potential impact of lead exposure, researchers analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study, which included blood lead level estimates. They found evidence that lead exposure may have caused 5.5 million heart disease deaths (in 2019) and the loss of a cumulative 765 million IQ points– which is nearly 80% higher than a previous estimate.

Overall, the analysis revealed that the global impact of lead exposure may be on par with that of air pollution and possibly three times greater than the combined health effects of unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and handwashing.

The health burden from lead exposure was greatest in low and middle income countries but affected people worldwide. Key sources of lead that were cited included food, soil and dust, toys, lead-glazed pottery and ceramics, spices, cosmetics, electronic waste, lead acid battery recycling, and metal mining.

The ‘Power 9’ Best Longevity Practices from Blue Zones

Researchers have pinpointed some key habits– known as the ‘Power 9’– that people in Blue Zones regularly practice to achieve impressive longevity. Blue Zones are 5 specific areas in the world where people consistently live to be 100+ years old, largely free of chronic disease.

The Power 9 practices include: move naturally, have a purpose in life, reduce stress, practice the 80% diet rule (i.e., stop eating when 80% full), favor a plant-based diet, drink alcohol in moderate amounts, belong to a community, put family first, and keep a social circle that supports healthy behaviors.

Notably, though diet and exercise are always considered key pieces to longevity, Dan Buettner, a researcher and National Geographic Fellow, emphasized that the strong social ties found in Blue Zones were equally important for health, especially since loneliness is a top risk factor for a shorter life.

“There’s no short-term fix [or] supplement for longevity,” Buettner added. “Learn plant-based dishes that you like and cook at home. Curate a social circle of three to five healthy friends [who] will care about you on a bad day. Health behaviors are contagious, and friends tend to be long-term adventures.”

The Peak-Flavor, Nutrient-Packed Olive Oil

Did you know that most supermarket oils sit on the shelves for months growing stale, musty, and even rancid– a far cry from the highly nutritional fresh-pressed version?

Olive oil is a staple in the longevity-boosting Mediterranean diet and linked to benefits like lower inflammation and better heart and brain health, in large part because of the antioxidants and nutrients it contains. But, like other oils, its nutritional value is highest right after being pressed– and degrades significantly after sitting on the shelf for months (or years). That’s why T.J. Robinson, the “Olive Oil Hunter,” created the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club that ships farm-fresh, nutrient-rich artisanal olive oil straight to your door. Each oil is independently lab-certified to be 100% extra virgin and arrives direct from the farm with all its flavor and nutrition intact.

12 Surprising Signs of Dehydration

Feeling thirsty is one way your body tells you to drink more fluids, but sometimes dehydration is less obvious. Bad breath, itchy or dry skin, and dark circles under your eyes can all be signs you need to drink more water. Dehydration can also lead to muscle cramps, headaches, and constipation, and you might even get cravings for sweets. If you notice yourself feeling crabby or anxious for no apparent reason, try drinking a glass of water first to see if your mood improves. (More)

Yoga Can Improve Heart Function, Quality of Life After Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is too weak or stiff to pump properly, leading to symptoms like fluid buildup and shortness of breath. A new study has found that adding yoga to conventional treatments for heart failure could improve mental well-being and overall quality of life. In addition, participants in the study who were in the yoga group had improvements in systolic blood pressure and heart rate when compared with the non-yoga group. (More)

Sugary Drink Intake Has Increased 16% Since 1990

Sugar-sweetened drinks have been associated in studies with obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, mainly because they are a big source of added sugars in the diet. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to have harmed their popularity with global consumption rising by about 16% since 1990. The U.S. had the third highest number of sugary drink servings per week (4.9), which includes beverages like soft drinks, energy drinks, bottled fruit juices, and lemonade. (More)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Can Help Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is a disease that most frequently affects women and is characterized by chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog. There are currently few treatment options available, but a recent study found that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)– a common form of talk therapy– may help people with fibromyalgia. While it didn’t necessarily decrease physical pain, it did help reduce negative emotional responses to the pain, and individuals reported that their symptoms had significantly less impact on their daily lives. 3 Potential Health Risks of Titanium Dioxide, A Food Additive

Titanium dioxide is a controversial whitening ingredient added to various foods, cosmetics, and other everyday products. It’s currently banned in the EU as a food additive– though still allowed in other products– due to concerns that it might damage DNA. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has listed it as a Group 2B carcinogen (it may be carcinogenic but lacks sufficient research), and in nanoparticle form, titanium dioxide may contribute to oxidative stress in intestinal cells.
